Turning Theory Into Practice

The Story Bridge

The second challenge by Constructionarium Australia, the scaled-down replica of the Story Bridge was built by eighteen students and recent graduates under the guidance of several industry veterans.

The Story Bridge

In order to provide a hands-on learning experience for the next generation of engineers, Constructionarium has launched the second Queensland based, local icon replication project. This project aims to help develop practically minded engineers for the workforce through a collaborative and enjoyable education experience.

This year, five Australian based construction and engineering organisations have come together to support and fund this innovative program. These organisations include The Department of Transport and Main Roads, Downer, HDR, Transurban and The University of Queensland.

Commencing in late September 2017, 18 participants were asked to plan and manage the construction of the Story Bridge replica. Identifying and developing the cost structure, safety requirements, quality insurance, project logistics and material requirements. This was to be completed in just 5 days with an additional 3 days of training and planning provided. This hands-on construction project was completed under the supervision and guidance of a site and safety manager, generously provided by Downer.

The 18 young participants come from a mix of professional backgrounds including 2 Transurban Qld employees, 4 Department of Transport and Main Roads employees, 5 Downer employees, 3 HDR employees and 4 University of Queensland students. These participants are a mix of new graduates and university students who were selected for the program through a competitive scholarship program by their respective associated organisations.

This week-long program continues to connect Queensland’s next generation of engineers with some of the industry’s brightest and most successful leaders. The exceptional work ethic and skills displayed throughout this challenge have resulted in the creation of two internship positions for participating University of Queensland students with the industry renowned, Downer.

Participants of the Challenge Two Story Bridge project will unveil their 25-meter-long, 5 tone replica bridge on November 1, to industry peers and leaders at a VIP event, hosted by Struber.
“There is a desperate need in our industry to provide an environment where young professionals can safely transition from their academic exposure to the real world of civil engineering practice…which involves hands-on working with materials, machinery and each other.” Peter Anusas, General Manager Northern Region, BMD

The Story Bridge

The Story Bridge is a heritage-listed steel cantilever bridge spanning the Brisbane River that carries vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic between the northern and the southern suburbs of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. At 74m high, and 777m long, the Story Bridge is the longest cantilever bridge in Australia.
The bridge is part of Bradfield Highway and connects Fortitude Valley to Kangaroo Point. The Story Bridge opened in 1940 and is named after prominent public servant, John Douglas Story.

The Barcelona Tower

The Constructionarium Australia pilot program was launched on 29 August 2016 and ran for five days at the USQ Springfield campus, with early-career engineers from BMD, Aurecon and TMR working together to construct a nine-metre tall replica of the Barcelona TV Tower.

All-Female Story Bridge

In June 2019, Constructionarium Australia, supported by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Major Contractors Association, BMD Constructions and Seymour Whyte, undertook an all-female build of Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge.
