Turning Theory Into Practice

The Barcelona Tower

The Constructionarium Australia pilot program was launched on 29 August 2016 and ran for five days at the USQ Springfield campus, with early-career engineers from BMD, Aurecon and TMR working together to construct a nine-metre tall replica of the Barcelona TV Tower.

The Constructionarium Australia pilot program was launched on 29 August 2016 and ran for five days at the USQ Springfield campus, with early-career engineers from BMD, Aurecon and TMR working together to construct a nine-metre tall replica of the Barcelona TV Tower.

Based on the United Kingdom’s Constructionarium which was established over 10 years ago, the program was designed to provide an opportunity for construction, resources and engineering firms’ engineers and trainees, as well as university students to participate.

Through the Constructionarium Australia program, engineering students and graduates can apply the knowledge they have gained at university in a safe, practical and relevant environment.

The nineteen students from BMD Constructions, Aurecon and the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads participated in the pilot project at the University of Southern Queensland, which involved building a scaled-down replica of the Barcelona TV Tower.

Torre de Collserola

Designed by architect Sir Norman Foster and Spanish civil engineers Julio Martínez Calzón and Manuel Julià Vilardell. Torre de Collserola was built in 1991 by the Cubiertas y MZOV S.A. in time for the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Mainly used as a TV and radio transmitter, the tower features a pod for floor space and internal use, and uniquely uses guy wires for lateral support like a mast.

The highest point over Barcelona, the top antenna of Torre de Collserola reaches 288.4 m (946 ft) and the top of the pod, which has thirteen floors, reaches 152 m (499 ft).

The Story Bridge

The second challenge by Constructionarium Australia, the scaled-down replica of the Story Bridge was built by eighteen students and recent graduates under the guidance of several industry veterans.

All-Female Story Bridge

In June 2019, Constructionarium Australia, supported by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Major Contractors Association, BMD Constructions and Seymour Whyte, undertook an all-female build of Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge.
