Turning Theory Into Practice

Story Bridge Bridge Build September 2019

Constructionarium Australia in partnership with Fulton Hogan undertook a Story Bridge Build, at the Construction Training Centre in Salisbury from 25 September to 8 October.

Story Bridge Build

In September 2019, Constructionarium Australia, supported by Fulton Hogan, enabled 19 undergraduate, post-graduate and early stage professionals to take part in an 8 day training programme culminating in the construction of a replica of Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge.

Comprising a three-day training programme and five-day build, participants will have the opportunity to be part of a unique cohort and benefit from a dedicated learning and development experience with one outcome in mind; to create future leaders within Queensland’s construction sector.

Over the five-day build, participants gained skills and experience that would take one or two years to learn in the course of normal projects. They managed all aspects of an engineering project including project and issues management, safety, budgetary control and timely project delivery.

The training and construction programme was supported by Fulton Hogan, Queensland Major Contractors Association, Envision, Universal Cranes, Pulp Vision, HDR, Coates Hire, WH&S More Skills and will take place at The Construction Training Centre.

The Story Bridge

The Story Bridge is a heritage-listed steel cantilever bridge spanning the Brisbane River that carries vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian traffic between the northern and the southern suburbs of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. At 74m high, and 777m long, the Story Bridge is the longest cantilever bridge in Australia.

The bridge is part of Bradfield Highway and connects Fortitude Valley to Kangaroo Point. The Story Bridge opened in 1940 and is named after prominent public servant, John Douglas Story.

The Barcelona Tower

The Constructionarium Australia pilot program was launched on 29 August 2016 and ran for five days at the USQ Springfield campus, with early-career engineers from BMD, Aurecon and TMR working together to construct a nine-metre tall replica of the Barcelona TV Tower.

The Story Bridge

In order to provide a hands-on learning experience for the next generation of engineers, Constructionarium has launched the second Queensland based, local icon replication project. This project aims to help develop practically minded engineers for the workforce through a collaborative and enjoyable education experience..

All-Female Story Bridge Build

In June 2019, Constructionarium Australia, supported by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Major Contractors Association, BMD Constructions and Seymour Whyte, undertook an all-female build of Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge.
